The short version
This site has no ads, no tracking, and no analytics. Your information is never sold. It is only used to run the site, your account, and the forum.
What is collected
- Everyone who visits: the web server keeps standard logs (IP address, browser type, pages visited, and time). These are used only for security and troubleshooting, and are deleted automatically after about two weeks.
- If you create an account: your username, email address, and password. Passwords are stored scrambled (hashed) and cannot be read, even by the site owner. Anything you add to your profile is stored too.
- If you post in the forum: your topics and replies, along with the IP address they were posted from, to help deal with spam and abuse.
- Login protection: failed login attempts are recorded with the IP address and username used, to block password-guessing.
- Cookies: only the ones needed to keep you logged in and remember basic settings. No advertising or tracking cookies are used.
Services this site relies on
A few outside services help run the site. Each one only receives what it needs to do its job:
- Oracle Cloud hosts the server the site runs on.
- Cloudflare Turnstile checks that you are human on the sign-up and password reset forms. It processes your IP address and browser information for that check.
- Resend delivers the site’s emails, such as sign-up confirmations and password resets. It receives your email address and the message.
- Dropbox stores backup copies of the site, which include the account and forum data described above.
- Gravatar provides profile pictures. A scrambled version of your email address is sent to Gravatar to check whether you have a picture there.
Information is only shared beyond these services if required by law.
Content from other sites
Posts may include embedded content from other websites, such as videos. That content behaves as if you visited the other site directly, and that site may collect information about you under its own privacy policy.
How long information is kept
- Account information is kept until you ask for your account to be deleted.
- Forum posts stay up as part of the conversation unless you ask for them to be removed.
- Backups are replaced on a rolling schedule, so deleted information disappears from backups within a few weeks.
Your choices
You can ask for a copy of the information this site holds about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for your account and data to be deleted. Contact the address above and your request will be handled as quickly as possible.
Age
Anyone is welcome to read this site. Creating an account, which collects an email address, is limited to people 13 and older, and the site does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has created an account, please get in touch and it will be removed.
Security
The site uses an encrypted connection (HTTPS), scrambled password storage, login attempt limits, and regular backups. No website can promise perfect security, but reasonable care is taken to protect your information.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new date at the top.
